Peterborough Risk Watch Network
The Peterborough Risk Watch Network promotes childhood injury prevention through school-based programs, public education campaigns and community awareness events. The Network also facilitates the delivery of the Swim to Survive Program to local schools in Peterborough City and County.
The Swim to Survive program was developed and managed by the Lifesaving Society and teaches Grade 3 students the skills and awareness that will help them avoid or survive an unexpected fall into deep water. The program teaches students to:
- Recognize safe (and unsafe) places to swim
- Avoid hazards of cold and fast moving water
- Choose and use an appropriate life jacket
- Always swim with a swim buddy
- Roll into deep water
- Call for help immediately
- Tread water to control breathing
- Swim a short distance to make it to safety
Members of the Risk Watch Network each represent community organizations devoted to safety or an injury prevention area. Each member provides knowledge and experience to the Network ensuring that the group provides the most relevant and current information to the community.
The members of the Network are representatives from:
B!KE: The Peterborough Community Cycling Hub
Cavan Monaghan Fire Department
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
Otonabee Region Conservation Authority
Peterborough Child and Family Centres
Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board
