Oral Health
Oral health is an important aspect of overall health. The oral health program offers a range of services for eligible children, youth and adults in our community. Our services include:
- oral health screening in schools
- preventive and treatment services for children and youth
- assistance to families who have difficulty paying for dental services
- provision of information about oral health.
Find a pamphlet about our services here. Preventive and treatment services are offered at our Community Dental Health Clinic to eligible individuals and families receiving government-funded benefit programs, such as Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Non-Insured Health Benefits and the Interim Federal Health Program.
Caring For My Child’s Teeth
Parents and caregivers should brush their children’s teeth once per day until the age of 7. A small pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste should be used, and children should be encouraged to not swallow toothpaste during brushing.
Parents/caregivers should floss their children’s teeth once per day until age 9. The best way to do this is:
- Stand behind the child and cradle their head in your arms, or have the child sit on the floor and lay their head back in your lap
- Wrap the floss around each tooth in a C-shape
- Clean the tooth by gently moving the floss up and down
- Have the child rinse their mouth with water once finished

Healthy Snacking
Sticky, sugary foods do not make healthy snacks. They cause acid to form, which can lead to tooth decay. Try to limit foods such as fruit snacks, granola bars, cereal bars, chocolate bars, pop, and cookies. Drinking water is also an important part of taking care of your teeth; replace sugary drinks, like pop or juices, with water when you can.
Some healthy snack ideas include:
- Fruits & vegetables
- Crackers, breadsticks, or dry cereal (low in sugar)
- Hard boiled eggs
- Cheese or cheese strings
- Rice or corn cakes, popcorn, pretzels
- Yogurt
- Muffins
