Downtown Peterborough Route to Trace 130 Years of Local Public Health
Residents are invited to discover the fascinating history of local public health in a guided Jane’s Walk entitled “130 Years of Public Health in Peterborough: Making the Invisible Visible” taking place on Friday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m.
Hosted by Peterborough Public Health and the Peterborough Historical Society, the walk will feature sites connecting to past disease outbreaks such as the Spanish Flu and tuberculosis, as well as many 20th century accomplishments including clean water and sanitation systems. Along the way, guides will note other points of interest relating to current public health work such as improvements to our built environment, food safety and smoke-free spaces.
All are welcome to attend this free event. The walk will begin and end at Peterborough Public Health, Jackson Square, 185 King St. Free parking is available at King Street parking garage across the road.
The route will consist of sidewalks and paved surfaces, street crossings and city parks. There will be plenty of breaks for conversation. It is recommended that walkers wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle and snacks. Dogs must be kept on leash, and please remember to stoop and scoop. Please email janeswalkptbo@gmail.com with any accommodation needs.
The walk is free and participants can just show up, however walkers are encouraged to register in case there is an unforeseen change of plans. Optional registration is available by clicking here or going to www.eventbrite.com and searching for “Jane’s Walk public health”.
The walk is the first in a series of six Jane’s Walks taking place in Peterborough this May. Jane’s Walk is an annual global festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by famed urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs.
