Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program

Last reviewed/updated:  April 23, 2024

Promoting and Supporting your Family’s Health

Healthy Babies, Healthy Children is a free, confidential and voluntary program. It is for pregnant parents, their partners, and families with young children from birth to transition to school age. Public Health Nurses and Family Home Visitors can provide support, resources, and connect families with community programs to help give children the best start in life.

Before your Baby is Born

Having a baby can be both an exciting and challenging time and you may have a lot of questions. Learning about how your baby grows and develops can prepare you for your baby’s arrival. If you are pregnant, a Public Health Nurse can help you and your partner get ready for your new baby by connecting to answer your questions and provide you with support. Connection points can be via telephone calls, virtual visits or coming together in your home or in the community.

After your Baby is Born

After your baby is born, if you consent, your care provider can have a Public Health Nurse contact you within 48 hours. They will ask you about your new baby, how you are recovering, answer questions, provide health information, and link your family to supports in the community. If you wish, a home visit can be provided.

At Any Time

Some families may benefit from extra support. A Public Health Nurse and Family Home Visitor can provide in-home or virtual visits to you and your family. There we can discuss:

  • Having a healthy pregnancy
  • Being a new parent
  • Breastfeeding
  • Feeding babies and young children healthy nutritious foods
  • Helping children grow and develop
  • Keeping children safe
  • Finding health programs and social services in the community
