Announcing Two New Sites for Accessing Naloxone in Peterborough
Written by Communications, September 27, 2018
Peterborough Public Health is pleased to announce we are partnering with the 360 Degree Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge to increase access to Naloxone as part of the Peterborough Overdose Prevention Program.
“We are so pleased both of these agencies have signed on to be Naloxone Distribution sites so we can reach people where they are already accessing services with trusted service providers,” said Health Promoter Deanna VandenBroek with Peterborough Public Health.
Naloxone is a safe lifesaving medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, buying time for a person to get the necessary medical attention they may need. Providing access to Naloxone is an evidence-based harm reduction approach that is only one piece of a broader comprehensive plan to address the harms associated with opioids in Ontario.
The program launched at the 360 Degree Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic at 360 George Street North as of September 20 and will launch on October 1 at the 466 George Street North, Peterborough office of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge.
Any person who is currently taking an opioid for any reason, or has in the past, or is a family member or friend of someone who has used opioids can access a free Naloxone kit and training on how to use it at either of these sites.
Existing sites with the Peterborough Overdose Prevention Program where Naloxone is also available include PARN at 159 King Street, FourCAST at 130 Hunter Street West and Peterborough Public Health at 185 King Street. In addition to the community stream of the program, Naloxone is also available at other locations, which are listed at www.ontario.ca/page/where-get-free-naloxone-kit.
