Free Event to Explore the Impact of Wasted Food on our Community
Local residents are invited to a free event called “Food: Too Good to Waste” at Peterborough Public Health on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. to explore how wasted food affects the community, economy, and the environment.
Organized by several community partners, this event features four guest speakers who will present on various aspects of food waste and what action can be taken to prevent it. “With 47% of all food produced being thrown out at home in the form of uneaten leftovers, untouched produce or food that was simply ‘bought and forgot’, we believe this is an important environmental and health issue in our community,” said Luisa Magalhaes, Registered Dietitian at Peterborough Public Health. “The good news is, that by making simple changes at home, we can all make a huge difference in reducing wasted food.”
Speakers include D. Trevor Barton, Executive Director of the Municipal Waste Association, Laurie Westaway, Lead Waste Reducer from Wasteaway, and Lily Hamill and Tara Stephen from Peterborough County’s Waste Management Department. Learn about the many facets of food waste and discuss realist solutions, including composting, waste audits, everyday household waste reduction practices, and sustainable waste management.
Peterborough Public Health is located in downtown Peterborough at 185 King St., Peterborough. Free parking is available after 6 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.
This event is organized by the City of Peterborough, County of Peterborough, Nourish, Peterborough GreenUp, Peterborough Public Health and Sustainable Peterborough.
