Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

What are they?

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are bacteria and viruses that are passed from partner to partner through sexual contact. Many STIs have no symptoms.

What do they do?

They can have serious consequences for your future. They may cause pain, harm your reproductive organs, and affect your chances of having children.

If you think you may have, or be at risk for an STI, the Sexual Health Services staff will discuss testing and its implications.

Clinic physicians and nurses will perform the tests, and you will be instructed on safer sex and condom use for future protection.

Questions you should be prepared for:

• Do you have signs or symptoms of infection?
• Does your partner (or partners) show any signs or symptoms of infection?
• Can you tell me about your sexual partner or partners?
• When was the last time you had sexual intercourse?

Clients being tested for STIs will take part in a full discussion about the infections, the treatment recommended, and any procedures required.

All clients are given information about safer sex and provided with condoms to decrease the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

The Sexual Health Services provides STI medication free to clients.
