March 28 Event Explores How Climate Change is Affecting Public Health

Everyone is invited to learn how climate change is affecting our collective health at a free public event called “Your Health & Climate Change: Up Close & Personal” on Thursday, March 28 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Peterborough Public Health.

“Climate change is already affecting us locally, and this is an opportunity to learn first-hand of the ways our health is being impacted,” said Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health. “From extreme weather to the spread of insect-borne diseases and increased UV radiation exposure, we’re hoping to raise everyone’s awareness of the health risks and discuss how we can best respond as a community.”

The event will begin with remarks by Mayor Diane Therrien and features Dr. Edward Xie as the keynote speaker. Dr. Xie is an emergency physician and faculty member at the University of Toronto. Through various projects he has seen the devastating effects of climate change on human health. After medical training, he studied perceptions of climate change and health for his graduate degree in the UK and currently continues to speak about and investigate issues of environment and health. Dr. Xie has worked abroad for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and Global Health Emergency Medicine. In Canada, he is Chair of the Ontario Committee for Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, and a member of the board of directors for Toronto Environmental Alliance.

Following Dr. Xie’s presentation there will be a panel discussion featuring local leaders who will answer questions from the audience. The panel will include representatives from Peterborough Green-Up, Sustainable Peterborough, and Cambium Aboriginal.

“Your Health & Climate Change: Up Close & Personal” is hosted by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), For Our Grandchildren, Peterborough Family Health Team, Peterborough GreenUp, and Peterborough Public Health. The event takes place at Peterborough Public Health, located on 185 King St. and is free of charge. Free parking is available across the road at the King St. Parkade.
