Collective Kitchens – A Collective Kitchen is a small group of people that meet monthly to prepare two to three meals for themselves and their families. It is a chance for participants to meet new people, share their cooking skills, and make low cost, nutritious meals. There are several groups to join and there is always a possibility of starting a new group within Peterborough City and County. Your donation would help cover the cost of food and childcare for participants.
Come Cook with Us is a food skills program that is offered by Nutrition Promotion staff at the Health Unit, at no charge, to priority population groups in Peterborough City and County. The sessions are four to six weeks long. Participants prepare a meal; share recipes and cooking tips; and learn about nutrition and food safety. Participants take home cooked meals and receive a grocery store gift card. This gift card allows people to buy ingredients so that they can try Come Cook with Us recipes at home. Transportation and child care is made available when needed to decrease barriers to participation.
Contraceptive Assistance Fund – Access to low-cost or no-cost contraception is an ongoing issue for many of our clients who attend the Sexual Health Clinic. Cost is often cited as the main reason for not initiating and/or discontinuing contraceptives by our young clients. The PPH contraceptive assistance fund will be used to subsidize those clients as we continue to advocate provincially for better access to low-cost/no-cost contraception.
Dental Treatment Assistance Fund (DTAF) – Dental health is key to overall health and quality of life, and is an essential part of mental, physical, and social well-being. It affects a person’s speech, nutrition, growth, development, learning, employability, self-esteem and even the ability to go to sleep! There is a real gap in the provision of dental services for adults and seniors at the present time, as public dental insurance for basic dental care for these age groups does not exist. Individuals who live on low incomes, unless they have dental benefit coverage under a government-funded program, have no resources for dental care. Dental program staffs frequently receive calls from those with acute dental pain, infection, and trauma- and have to tell them that there is nothing we can do to help. Reports of people whose teeth are falling out, or who are pulling their own teeth to obtain relief, are not uncommon. The DTAF, which is dependent solely on donations, is an ongoing endeavor to assist individuals on low incomes, who do not have the financial resources, and have no private or public dental insurance, to obtain emergency dental treatment. Anticipated specific outcomes for individuals assisted by the fund are the elimination of pain, the ability to eat and sleep, and the ability to work. Until financial assistance becomes available for individuals 18+ years of age living on low-incomes, the DTAF remains an important resource for individuals who cannot afford dental care, even when in acute pain and distress.
Food for Kids Program – Breakfast is recognized as the most important meal of the day, and provides children with the energy they need to fuel their growing minds and bodies. Yet many children miss the opportunity for breakfast for many different reasons. Food For Kids breakfast and snack programs in local Peterborough City and County schools are a community response, and are seen as a critical investment in our children. Please join our team! Your generous donation, through financial contributions and/or volunteering, truly makes a difference to child hunger in our community.
Peterborough Gleans is a not for profit grassroots network connecting people in need, for the past nine years, with the opportunity to pick free, fresh produce in the City and County, that might otherwise go to waste.
We contact growers, find funding to subsidize the cost of buses and coordinate the participation of community members to go on these trips.
We are volunteers from the community, faith groups and housing complexes.
Peterborough Gleans provides an opportunity for members of our community to help themselves by going out and picking fresh produce that they need to eat and for freezing and canning for the winter. For every gleaner, there are usually three families benefiting from this local food.
In the past we have been able to glean a wide variety of produce, worth over $28,000, with funding and volunteer support for bus trips. We are asking if you would consider making a donation to help cover the cost of buses and coordination of trips this season to get people out to the fields, enabling them to put fresh produce on their tables and keep food from being plowed under.
Thank you for considering our request.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact us at peterboroughgleans@hotmail.com
The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children (HBHC) Program Equipment and Supply Fund is for the support of client families who require financial assistance to obtain a car seat, crib, safety gate or other piece of equipment to promote their child’s safety. Up to $40 is given towards the purchase of a safety gate and up to $75 is given towards the purchase of other equipment once per year.
Myrtle’s Kitchen (Community Kitchen) – For the thousands of local residents who struggle to access and afford healthy meals, the opening of Myrtle’s Kitchen in June 2016 offers them not only the food skills they need, but some hope as well. The new kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances, such as Peterborough’s only vent-less industrial dishwasher, two ranges (one gas, one electric), a heat-activated fire suppression system in the vent hood above the stoves, a separate food storage pantry, and is fully stocked with cooking equipment. The kitchen is being used to teach cooking skills, healthy eating, safe food handling, and connect participants to local foods to support local food producers.
Prenatal Classes for Young Parents (formerly the Teen Prenatal Supper Club), is an effective way of providing support and face-to face prenatal education to expectant youth and their support persons. Participants report increased knowledge and confidence following attendance at a series of classes. At these classes, participants have a chance to meet and socialize with peers, while learning about labour and birth, breastfeeding and caring for their baby. The prenatal classes are taught by a Public Health Nurse and offered free of charge. The Peterborough Family Resource Centre provides funding for transportation and healthy snacks. However, transportation for pregnant youth who live outside the city is a significant barrier to attendance. In the evaluation report of the Teen Prenatal Supper Club, attendance and attrition were identified as concerns. It has been recommended that we “explore possible sources of funding….to remove barriers to access among pregnant teens who reside in the County”. Prenatal Classes for Young Parents would like to request that donations could be made to provide a contingency fund to pay for taxis or provide money to assist with the cost of gas for pregnant youth who live in the County.
