Guidelines for One Day Barbeque Events

Requirements for Opening, Renovating and Operating a Restaurant

Throughout the area served by Peterborough Public Health, there are many special or community events that involve serving food to the public, or providing personal services such as piercings or tattoos. In some cases, these special events can be attended by thousands of people.

Food that is improperly prepared can cause illness, and in some cases, serious complications or even death. Improper equipment, or procedures in personal services settings such as piercings or tattoos can also lead to the spread illness due to their invasive nature.  The Health Unit’s role is to make sure that the public is protected from health hazards, which is accomplished through review of special event proposals, and inspections of event food vendors and personal service settings.

If you are an event organizer, please ensure you are aware of the requirements (linked below). It is your responsibility to submit a complete “Organizer Application” package to PPH at least 14 days prior to the event that includes all of the applications from both food vendors and personal service setting operators.

Farmers’ Market Food Safety Inspections

Peterborough Public Health (PPH) is mandated by provincial legislation to perform food safety inspections of all farmers’ market food vendors within our jurisdiction. The purpose of these inspections is to prevent or reduce cases of food-borne illness.

Food Recalls & Allergy Alerts

Consumers can check this site for a listing of recalls and allergy alerts about food products which do not meet Canadian safety and quality standards. The reasons for these notices and actions may range from an undeclared ingredient to a product which has been contaminated. If you or someone you know has food allergies, this site will be of particular interest, since many of the food notices involve common allergens.
